How to beat the Flu Season!

Posted on September 30th, 2019

As the chilly nights start to hit us, so do our coughs, colds and most importantly, the dreaded flu. This year, unfortunately, deliveries of flu vaccinations have been delayed which has impacted GP practices across the country and led to delays of clinics and the availability of the flu jab for patients.

Despite the delays, the Spinney now has a walk-in flu jab clinic running on October 26th; this clinic will enable those aged over 65 or the who have received a letter from the surgery to receive their vaccination. Please be aware that we will be running more clinics very soon for those not invited on this occasion which we will communicate to patients as soon as we’re able to.

How can I prevent the flu?

Although receiving a vaccination is your best protection against catching the flu, there are plenty of ways to help lower or prevent your chances of getting the flu this season which don’t include shutting yourself away until next Spring. Here are our top tips:

•  Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze
•   Always wash your hands before and after eating
•  Avoid touching your face
•  Try to limit your contact with those with the flu or those who feel generally unwell
•  Avoid sharing your food or drink with other people

How will I know if I have the flu?

Sometimes the common cold can be mistaken as the flu, however their symptoms can differ:

If you think you have the flu, please ensure you stay at home where you can recover comfortably and also reduce the risk of others catching it. You should make sure you drink plenty of water and try some over the counter remedies like throat sweets, paracetamol or nasal sprays to ease your symptoms.

If you are concerned about your symptoms, please don’t hesitate to contact us at the surgery or dial 111 for the out of hours service when we are closed.
