‘Help Us Help You’: the NHS is here for you

Posted on April 29th, 2020

At the Spinney, we want to make sure our patients know that even with the coronavirus outbreak, we are here for you if you need it. Worryingly, four in ten people are too concerned about being a burden on the NHS to seek help from their GP during this time, which means that people may be risking their long-term health, and their lives, by delaying getting the help they need.

Professor Carrie MacEwen, Chair of The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has said that “We are very concerned that patients may not be accessing the NHS for care because they either don’t want to be a burden or because they are fearful about catching the virus. Everyone should know that the NHS is still open for business and it is vitally important that if people have serious conditions or concerns they seek help. ”

Our clinicians are still able to have telephone consultations with patients to discuss your health and any concerns you have. If the clinician feels it is appropriate, they may ask you to send some photos of any ailments you have or arrange for a video consultation. You can call us at the surgery (or NHS 111 when we close) to get advice. For more serious cases such as heart attack/stroke symptoms, please call 999 or attend hospital where care and beds are available.

[Update: 09/06/2020 – Updated information regarding dentists can be found on our post, ‘Accessing Dental Care during COVID-19‘]

If you have a dental issue during lockdown (i.e. severe toothache or a dental infection; changes inside your mouth such as a white orred patch, a lump or an ulcer that won’t heal etc.), it is important that you know how to access help when you need it. All high street dental and orthodontic practices can give advice, guidance and prescriptions, which you can collect from your local pharmacy. If you are in pain or in need of support and need help or advice, please telephone your dental practice in the usual way. If you are not registered with a dentist you can use the NHS Find A Dentist Service. You will be assessed and given advice over the phone, which may result in a remote consultation with a dentist.
