GP Training & Medical Education

GP Training

From 1996, it has been a requirement that all doctors newly entering, and some doctors returning to General Practice, be vocationally trained. Patients, the practice team, GP Registrars and House Officers all benefit from this process.

The Spinney Surgery is registered as a Teaching Practice and as such is committed to and is responsible for helping GP Registrars, Medical Students, Nurses and other Health Workers with their training and development.

As part of the Spinney Team’s commitment to teaching, the Practice must achieve and maintain certain levels of standards that are subject to regular external examination and inspection. These examinations and inspections are carried out by doctors who specialise in medical education, thus maintaining maximum patient confidentiality.

The Spinney has been training registrars since 1978 and was recently re-approved for five years. Dr Raggoo supervises the training but all the doctors at the surgery enjoy a teaching role and like to get involved.

The Spinney is also one of the Practices linked to the Department of General Practice at Cambridge University and has taken students since the Clinical School was founded. Dr Culloty organises the teaching of medical students which has developed to form a major part of the Spinney Practice. All doctors share this educational responsibility and it has become an enjoyable and challenging part of practice life.

As a patient you may be offered an appointment with a GP Registrar or medical students who will have a senior doctor supervising them. As part of their placement GP registrars may sometimes want to video consultations for their own education, with patient consent. Our reception team will ensure that you are aware of any such arrangements, please let them know if you would prefer an alternative appointment as soon as possible, preferably when making the initial booking.

Medical Education

As a teaching practice we are responsible for helping GP Registrars, medical students, nurses and other health workers with their training. As part of our commitment to teaching, the practice has to be kept up to certain standards. I If you would like to be one of our “bank” of patients who we invite to meet students let Debra Wheatley know.
