Carers Week 2020: Making Caring Visible

Posted on June 9th, 2020

This year, people across the country are facing new challenges as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, with many carers increasingly taking on more. Those looking after someone should be recognised for the difficulties they are experiencing, respected for all they are doing, and provided with information, support and understanding.

There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. They are looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness or who needs extra help as they grow older. Caring impacts on all aspect of life from relationships and health to finances and work. As carers are experiencing even more challenging circumstances this year, it is vitally important that we both recognise the contribution that carers make to their local communities, but that we also connect them to support to help them manage their own health and wellbeing.

This is why the theme for Carers Week 2020 is Making Caring Visible. All of us, wherever we live, whatever we do, have a part to play.

Ways to Get Involved

Why not use Carers Week to reach out and have a conversation with someone you know is caring? Make sure they are supported and let them know of any resources they might need to get additional information and help. Caring can be a constant juggling and balancing act, sometimes without a moment’s rest and many carers can feel isolated. Sometimes a catch-up can really change someone’s day for the better.

Social media is a great tool to help us show our support for carers. Why not use the Carers Week website to Add Your Voice and Pledge Your Support? Or share on Facebook or Twitter about the work done by carers and show your appreciation.

Together we can help people to identify themselves as carers and get the information and support they need. We can highlight the contribution unpaid carers make and the challenges carers face.

At the Spinney, we strive to support carers in the community and provide them with the help they need to give the best care possible and also to take care of themselves. We have plenty of resources on our website to help carers get the support they need as well as helpful resources for carers. You can find all this information on our website pages, Carers in the Community & Carers Direct

The Spinney has also been awarded the Carers Friendly Tick for Healthcare by Caring Together which recognises us as a practice who go above and beyond for the carers in our community to help support them however we can. For more information about the Carers Friendly Tick, please click here.

Unfortunately, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are not able to host our annual Carers Tea for Carers Week and it is unlikely that any events will be taking place for the remainder of the year. We look forward to welcoming our carers and those that they care in 2021.
