RSV Vaccination Programme

From 1st September 2024, a new respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccination programmes will be introduced.

Programme for older adults aged 75 to 79 years old

From September 1st 2024, we will be starting to vaccinate 75yr old with a new vaccine to prevent Respiratory syncytial virus or RSV, This is a virus that causes infections of the lungs and breathing passages. It is highly contagious (easy to get from other people). In older adults, RSV is a common cause of a lung disease which can cause life-threatening pneumonia.

The RSV vaccine is currently recommended for everyone turning 75yr old on or after 1st August 2024, up to and including 31st July 2025. For the 1st year only the vaccine will also be offered to those who are already aged 75 – 79 yrs on 1st August 2024.Initially we will be vaccinating the 75yr old group and then moving onto the catch up programme.

Programme for pregnant women to protect infants

All women who are at least 28 weeks pregnant (the eligible cohort) on 1 September 2024, will be offered a single dose of the RSV vaccine. After that, pregnant women will become eligible as they reach 28 weeks gestation and remain eligible up to birth.
