Self Care Medicines.

The Medicine Optimisation Team of the Cambridgeshire CCG has instructed us to stop prescribing treatments that are available over the counter, inexpensive and used intermittently. This includes hay fever medication which we are therefore no longer routinely issuing and instead asking patients if they are able to purchase themselves.

The main reason for this rationing is the very challenged financial position of the Cambridgeshire health economy which if not addressed will result in cuts to important services which will affect us all but we must also remember that there are advantages to buying these medications as it promotes self care, independence and reduced reliance on the surgery.

At The Spinney we understand that such changes are not popular but all of us must do what we can to protect our fragile health economy and we will prescribe for those patients unable or unwilling to support our local NHS in this way.

Introducing The Spinney Patients Association

Did you know?

The Association was set up to provide a link between patients and the surgery staff and currently represents more than 10,000 patients.

The management of the Association is provided by a committee of twelve volunteers, which are themselves patients of the Spinney Surgery. The committee meets at least 4 times per year and it is funded through its own fundraising activities and donations.

Funds can be used for venue hire for the popular education evenings or to assist with the provision of medical equipment or services to patients. In November 2015, the Association purchased a specialist drinking device for a patient required regular hydration but found this difficult with conventional methods.

Over the years the committee, in collaboration with Spinney Surgery, has organized numerous evening events to help increase health awareness amongst individuals. Topic have included healthy eating, children’s health, diabetes, heart disease, skin and sun; all delivered by specialists in the field from our region.

If you have any comments or thoughts about the SPA or you would like the SPA’s help please contact us on CAPCCG.SpinneyPatientInfo@nhs.net

The Spinney Patient Association have set up a new Facebook page which features health & wellbeing issues at a local & national level. It features a variety of health related subjects, which we hope you will find useful & interesting. It can be found at: The Spinney Surgery Patients Association. We would also be keen to hear from anyone involved in any local health related groups which we can help publicise through the page- please message us with details through the page.
