Self Care Medicines.
The Medicine Optimisation Team of the Cambridgeshire CCG has instructed us to stop prescribing treatments that are available over the counter, inexpensive and used intermittently. This includes hay fever medication which we are therefore no longer routinely issuing and instead asking patients if they are able to purchase themselves.
The main reason for this rationing is the very challenged financial position of the Cambridgeshire health economy which if not addressed will result in cuts to important services which will affect us all but we must also remember that there are advantages to buying these medications as it promotes self care, independence and reduced reliance on the surgery.
At The Spinney we understand that such changes are not popular but all of us must do what we can to protect our fragile health economy and we will prescribe for those patients unable or unwilling to support our local NHS in this way.
At the Spinney we provide an integrated Nursing and healthcare service. By using the skills of our Practice Nursing Team, Community Nursing Team & Health Visiting Teamworking closely together we provide a comprehensive service of nursing, health promotion and preventative medicine via a range of services and special clinics (see below)
The practice offers three types of service availability:-
Throughout the week the team also provide other services including blood pressure checks, new patient checks, family planning, general health checks, and most types of promotion of good health rather than the treatment of ill-health.
In addition we also offer a blood taking (phlebotomy) service and the taking of electrocardiograms and urinalysis by our Health Care Assistants.
All treatment room procedures and specialised service clinics are by appointment, and are available by contacting 01480 495347. It is usually necessary for our reception staff to ask a little more about your condition so they can ensure you are given the right type of appointment.

WE WILL ASK YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE YOU ARE GOING AND FOR HOW LONG AND COMPLETE A FORM WITH THIS INFORMATION, WE WILL THEN ASK OUR TEAM TO REVIEW YOUR RECORDS ABOUT THE POSSIBLE VACCINES YOU MIGHT NEED.
THIS WAY WE CAN MAKE SURE WE CAN FIT YOU IN FOR YOUR VACCINATIONS IF NEEDED. If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.
If vaccinations are recommended for travel these will be free to the patient. Some vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Our reception staff will be happy to advise you about appointment availability . Our fees for these services can vary. We are now registered for VAT so this will be charged on some non NHS work. The list of fees is not exhaustive.
